Update: PFC Camilo Mejia, imprisoned
Private First Class Camilo Mejia, who refused to return to Iraq where he had previously been a prison guard at the Al Assad prison, is now sentenced to one year in prison, following a court martial. His pleas to become a conscientious objector have not been officially recognized.
Letters to the Commander General who could still shorten Camilo Mejia’s sentence to “time served” can be sent to
Major General William Webster

A New York based advocacy group called “Citizen Soldier” submitted Camilo Mejia’s testimony to Senators Hilary Clinton and Carl Levin five months before the Abu Ghraib prison torture scandal became widely known. The Senate Armed Services Committee neglected to investigate Camilo’s eyewitness report of prisoner abuse. Today the trial for Ms. England begins, who is charged with abusive treatment of prisoners. Currently, the US Senate has opted not to conduct further investigations because of conflicting reports from the US military.
Camilo Mejia was sentenced to one year in prison for refusing to work as a prison guard in Iraq, because of the abuses he witnessed, while PFC Savitz was sentenced to one year in prison for abusing prisoners during his tenure as a prison guard in Iraq. Please contact your elected reps, media, religious and community leaders to help point out these contradictions and urge further support for PFC Camilo Mejia.
