What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is a format based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language), which means that each piece of data in the list - a headline, a description of a story - is coded separately so that a program will know exactly what to do with it. The XML format is designed to easily share web content, and is particularly suitable for news items. An RSS service (also known as an RSS channel) consists of a list of items, each of which contains a headline, description, a link to a web page and its author(s). You can use it to display headlines on another site or you can use a program called a "news aggregator" to read the news. These programs allow you to subscribe to various RSS feeds from different news sites. They also let you read headlines from dozens or hundreds of news sites at one time. The programmes automatically go to the web sites to check for updates, so the stories come to you, without you having to check the sites for new stories.

How do I use RSS?

To use RSS, you will need a special RSS news reader or aggregator that will allow you to collect and display RSS service. RSS news readers allow you to view the service you select all together in the same place and, by automatically retrieving updates, stay current with new content soon after it is published.

There are many different news readers available, many for free. Most news readers are applications that you download and install. Some others are web-based service you sign-up for that work inside your browser.

RSSOwl is an application that you install. It is open-source and can be used with Windows, Mac, or Linux.
